Jubilee 2011 Reflections

Ashley Harris attended Jubilee 2011:

I went in to Jubilee expecting it to be like a conference that I went to in middle school and high school that was called Vision. It was in Lancaster, and the whole focus was on missions: where you could go and serve, what missions organizations were available, and hearing missionaries from around the world speak. While I learned so much at that conference, and it opened my eyes to all that missionaries do, I knew that I wouldn’t be like all the missionaries they mentioned; I didn’t feel God calling me overseas or somewhere far away. I knew he wanted me to be an Interior Designer. So when I signed up to go to Jubilee, I was nervous that the whole time they would push us to drop out of school, or change our majors, and figure out a way to be missionaries overseas. But it wasn’t like that at all!

All the speakers, and each of the breakout sessions was focused on where students are right now. We’re in school, we’re working hard at what we see as our passion, and now we want to know how God can use us in those fields. I loved the breakout sessions, because I got to learn about different passions I have and how just because I know what field I want to work in, doesn’t mean I can’t use my other passions to serve God. My sessions talked about culture and pop music, working in a secular work place, and how to have true worship. I wish there could have been more breakout sessions because it made the conference such a personal experience.

But, it was so incredible to be in a huge auditorium with 2,500 other people worshipping the same God. I feel like even though we have a Christian group on our campus, it’s easy to feel alone, and that your faith is only this personal connection you have with God. And while it is personal, it’s amazing when you can fellowship with other believers with the same faith; it’s what God commands us to do. Jubilee was awesome, and I definitely want to go again. It was so refreshing, reminding me of things I’ve learned for years but so often forget, and taught me new concepts about Christianity that are sometimes pushed aside.

Hey, everyone! August 23rd has come and gone. For many of us, it was a crazy week but still refreshing to see our Cornerstone friends. Even better, we got to fellowship with old friends and new friends at our first Revive of the semester! Thanks again everyone for coming out.

If you weren't there, don't worry, there are many more to come. The Revive theme for this semester is titles "The Core". As we fellowship, we want to really identify the core beliefs of Christianity and what they mean. It's going to be wonderful! Hey cornerstoners

I kicked my 2010 summer off by going on a poorly planned trip to California. Right now I am at a Bible College in Murrietta that a good amount of my friends go to from home. It's not at all what I had expected it to be: the campus here is beautiful and so are the people. I love it here, I had forgotten how uplifting it is to constantly be around a bunch of believers. I am meeting an interesting variety of individuals who are in love with the Lord and who have many different incredible testimonies.

Right now I am with my california fambam... I did not realize how much I have missed them. (I've also missed the Filipno hospitality of which I am deprived of at school where right when you walk in the door, food is thrown into your mouth. It's a dream come true to me). We started our time together at disney world/ california adventures and then hit up random tourists hotspots. It's actually really cold here some days because of the wind, but its still so beautiful! =)

Today, I am taking the day off from site seeing to do some homework, which isn't going so well because it's hard to be motivated about summer school when on vacation. Then tonight I am going to a hip hop show with my cousins, haha... ya know, im gonna show these califronians how to hip hop and stuff. But people from So you think you can dance should be there, so I'll memorize some dance moves and then teach them to you guys when I get back. For sure.

Okay, cool, PEACE.

Oh! PS!!! Yesterday, I worked out with the beachbuffs at muscle beach!! Hahah... that was humbling, to say the least.

Hey hey!

Here's what i'm up to:
Staying in Philadelphia and working with the Roxborough, Manayunk, and Wissahickon Historical Society to create set design and signage for a historical festival in the Leverington Cemetery in October. Also involved with liberti church and "Playstreets," where we'll be shutting down streets on 14 blocks in Kensington daily to give out free lunches and planning fun activities for the kids there. Taking a class, starting research for my thesis design project, and living on campus - so give me a call if you're ever around =)

Next week is the beginning of the weekly life groups that will allow seekers and believers on campus to dig into scripture and apply it to our every day life at Philadelphia University in meaningful and purposeful ways. Check out the MEN'S LIFE GROUP and WOMEN'S LIFE GROUPS sidebar for more on days, times and locations.

This semester the groups will be studying God's unique design for manhood and womanhood respectively. Why did He create us differently and how can we use that for Christ's glory? Naturally, each group will take a unique direction based on the individuals and leaders involved. We welcome you to jump in and receive the blessing of God's Word, consider its application to your situation, and seek out Christ's unique calling on your life both on campus and for the future. Come as often as you can, and consider making it a consistant priority. We believe God has blessed us with a great group of Life Group Leaders who will walk alongside and challenge you throughout the semester.

To start off on a level playing field, both the Men's Life Group and Women's Life Groups will be going through The Gospel Centered Life; a nine week study that asks three huge questions: "What is the gospel?", "What does the gospel do in us?", and "How does the gospel work through us?". Learn more at World Havest Mission's website. These questions will help us apply the gospel to our lives on and off campus, as well as challenge us to see the seriousness held within the pages of scripture. Come as often as you can, we believe God has blessed us with a great group of Life Group Leaders who will assist you and challenge you throughout the semester.
